At the Saturday market, you may have noticed Lagier Ranches with paw paws. John has been growing them for a few years but I never bothered tasting them. I wish I had.
The fruit is somewhere between a mango and a banana and if it didn’t have such big pits inside, I think it would be a more popular treat. John gave me sheets of information on paw paws but I quickly lost interest. The real point is they’re delicious and I’m inspired to get a few trees and see if I can’t grow them in Napa.
In the photo, John Lagier, who normally doesn’t look so much like David Crosby, offers up some of his delcious paw paws. I say get them while you can.
I went on a farm tour the other day that included Lagier — at the farm, John and his gf (Casey?) served up some delicious paw paw ice cream. I never was a huge fan of paw paws until I had them in this ice cream — incredibly complex and caramel-y.
Paw paw? I like the name and it sounds good. Probably goes nicely with bacon.
xo, Biggles
I think I have access to a tree. I’m a little concerned because it freezes in Napa but we’ll see….
Paw Paws grow in Maine so there shouldn’t be a problem.
I grow a couple of Paw Paw Trees. There’s a great Indiana University extension site (I think?) about Paw Paws. Freezing isn’t bad, but it might be difficult to grow from seed. I guess they have a long tap root. You need two though to pollinate. They have the most unique looking purplish brown hanging upside down flowers. It’s a cool thing to have. I know this is an older post, but still thought I’d add some thoughts.
