Gracias, Amigos

David Lida has a wonderful blog and wrote a fascinating book on Mexico City called First Stop in the New World: Mexico City, the Capital of the 21st Century

. I've never met him but you feel as if you know him from his writings.

His blog should be bookmarked. Today he wrote:

My friend Patrice Wynne sent along the following quote from Laurie
Garrett, senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign
Relations:

“I think the whole world should be saying, ‘Gracias, amigos,’ to the
Mexicans for the tremendous sacrifice they have made. They may have
stopped what would otherwise have been a serious pandemic.”

I thought it was an interesting observation as we make flu jokes and make fun of the hysteria the media created. If this thing had gotten worse and Mexico had done nothing, you can imagine the patronizing attitude we would have taken.

  1. Lida’s a fantastic writer. If you haven’t already read it, his first collection of stories “Travel Advisory” is excellent. I just got word from a friend who lives in Puerto Vallerta. He said it’s very surreal there because everything is closed but nobody is sick.
