I'm so happy with my new molcajete! Isn't it beautiful?
It's a gift from my friends and I kept touching the rock all the way home from Mexico on this last trip. The design is based on a pre-conquest molcajete.
I love it because it's so deep and there are no feet.
You can see from the jagged edges that the way it crushes food is pretty unique. A blender or food processor don't quite cut it.
Most people would be happy with one.
Love the jagged edges. And you’re not alone–I have two and that’s not nearly enough!
I have a Cambodian/Lao-style mortar and pestle. It’s ceramic. It’s very similar to the one shown on this site: http://importfood.com/claymortarpestle.html
I think your solid stone molcajete is much better looking.
I wonder how they compare as far as food preparation goes. ?The molcajete has quite a wide/flat bowl while the Lao mortar and pestle is quite narrow at the bottom
How do you clean it w/o wasting food stuck in the crevices?
I just bought my first molcajete last week (I was so excited!) and had no idea what to do with it, or how to clean it, or season it, and the first site I visited was yours to get some ideas. I ground up quite a bit of rice in the thing, and now was wondering how you recommend cleaning it. Things get trapped in those little crevices. Also, if you have any recipes, that would be great.
I love the molcajete without legs.
What city in Mexico can it be found?
It’s beautiful.
Your response would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
