Mermalada de Xoconostle

The sour prickly pear known as xoconostle continues to take over the world as we know it with this new marmalade-style jam from my business partners (and good friends) at Xoxoc.

Toast-marmalada

Made from the fruit of the xoconostle and sugar (nada mas!), the jam is sour, sweet and yet never bitter. It has a vaguely tropical taste, which is odd for a desert plant, but I think it ‘s easy to agree that it’s delicious and different.

We sell the jam here in our store in Napa and of course online for shipping anywhere in the United States.

  1. Xoconostle (pronounced Show-Co-Nost-lay) is such a beautiful word . . . .

CONGRATS on bringing this to market, Steve!

Now that Xoxoc has perfected a sweet treat, do you see any chance that they will they be offering an unsweetened or savory version of the Xoconostle?

  2. We currently have the salty strips, which are ideal for tequila and beer. We were going to get the chile covered ones but the FDA has placed a huge tax on imported chiles, so that’s a delay. We’ll have some plain, dried ones as well. You can use them in a pinch in place of the fresh.

  3. Not just for snacking, try them for meat/chile flavored stews…
For the plain strips, you can soak them in warm water, let them release their flavor, add sugar and ice and have Agua de Xoconostle.
You could also blend the strips for a stronger flavor and or use this “agua” to flavor your Margaritas.
    PROVECHO/ENJOY!

  4. I watched the Vimeo video of everyone enjoying the xoconostle with shots of tequila. Do you just snack on them as they come in the bag, or is some sort of preparation required? Thanks.
